Reason #5: Rigid ideas about truth
Here’s the thing: Truth is not relative, but perspective is.
There’s an untapped skill that I want you to explore: You can completely understand someone with whom you completely disagree, even when it comes to spiritual truth.
This isn’t about agreeing with error. It’s about tracing the roots of that error with curiosity instead of fear, especially when the lie is spiritual in nature.
The work of Trauma-Informed Spiritual Intervention® is built on the knowledge of the power of truth, as well as the destructive nature of a lie. A lie should never be overlooked. But how you respond to a lie determines whether you open the door to healing or shut it completely.
If you can see how a lie formed, you gain insight and strategy to deconstruct it piece by piece. The first lie you hear in a counseling moment is rarely isolated. It usually has a host of experiences, falsehoods, and fears backing it up. And if you mismanage the gift of access, you risk becoming a threat instead of the safe solution they were hoping for.
I always say that trauma-informed care is not about walking on eggshells. We are prepared for resistance, and we embrace it. We don’t fear it or despise it.
Rigid ideas about truth, like assuming that any doubt is rebellion, are part of what causes people to excuse themselves from conversations that desperately need one clear, Spirit-led word. There are lots of theories about truth out there, and every trauma survivor has unconsciously chosen one to trust.
Pro tip: The better you get at uncovering the real conflict, the one that keeps repeating from season to season, the more precise you’ll be with the truth that can tear a stronghold down.
We must hold space for people who are doubting, deconstructing, or discerning without weaponizing scripture against their story.
TISI® trains Christian helpers to lead with honesty and humility, not the rigidity that shuts down real transformation.
